Impartial Review of Cybex Balios S 2-in-1

Authors

Intro

Recently, we decided to replace our Nuna TRVL lightweight stroller because it wasn't suitable for daily use. While it was fine for travel and shopping, it became evident during walks that it wasn't as comfortable to maneuver as larger strollers in the next category up, and our kids didn't take to it as well as expected. Another issue was that the push function of the brake broke down quite quickly. The brake itself worked, but not as originally intended. Another reason for switching was its tendency to tip over, which I found unacceptable. I specifically looked for a used lighter stroller on the resell market that would serve us well for about another year. The Balios series is incredibly popular, but here in Hungary, I rarely see the 2in1 convertible version; the Lux versions are more common.

I managed to find a black (Deep Black) Balios S 2in1 convertible model on Facebook Marketplace for 240 USD, and we've been testing it daily for a week now – in the city, in villages, on rougher roads, in and out of cars. So, let's dive into the review.

In the world of strollers, the term "2-in-1" usually means that both the seat unit and the bassinet can be attached to the stroller frame separately. However, in the case of the Balios S 2-in-1 convertible stroller, it means that the seat and the bassinet share the same frame, making it a space-saving stroller. When you need a bassinet, you simply pull the bassinet cover over the seat frame, and it’s ready to use. Once your child outgrows the bassinet, you can easily store the bassinet cover away and attach the seat fabric to the same frame for continued use.

Seat

As seen in the pictures, the seat is reversible and reclines to three positions. The canopy expands to an XXL size, but I find the peek-a-boo window underwhelming. Not only is it too small, but, as Cybex has done with many of their strollers, it lacks a magnet or Velcro to keep it fixed in an open position.

Due to its design, the seat does not allow for an adjustable footrest; the frame itself determines the footrest position, meaning it is fixed.

Basket

The storage basket has a weight limit of 5 kg, which I find to be a decent size for everyday use. Of course, compared to the Cybex Gazelle basket, it is much smaller, but since this isn’t a sibling stroller, that’s understandable.

Wheels

The wheels are bigger (18 cm front-wheel, 27 cm back-wheel ) and the usual EVA solid wheels. The suspension is pretty good and every wheel has it fortunately.

Cover

Our stroller has the "Deep Black" fabric, and since we bought it used, it's clear that dark fabrics are sensitive to sun exposure and can develop sun damage easily. The one we purchased isn’t in bad condition, but after just one instance of being left outside, the fabric can develop quite visible discoloration. So, it’s something to be mindful of—either take extra care or opt for a lighter fabric color if that would bother you.

Fold

As I noted in the table, one of the standout features is that the stroller folds with one hand, and the frame stands on its own when folded. However, it does not fold together with the seat attached.

Break

The brake is a rocker-style system, meaning your shoes won’t get damaged when using it—thankfully!

Handlebar

Compared to the Lux version, another difference is that the handlebar is covered in foam, while the child’s bumper bar is plastic. This version is generally more affordable than the Lux model, but it's also harder to find on the market.

Harness

The harness is the usual Cybex design with a large push-button buckle, not magnetic like harnesses of Nuna or ABC design strollers. The shoulder height is adjustable at the top. It is a five-point harness and cannot be used as a three-point one. The upper part is sewn into the fabric cover, meaning it cannot be taken apart.

Archived

Cybex no longer manufactures the Balios S 2-in-1 version; it’s archived on their website. However, the EOS Lux is the model that currently follows this design line, so if you like the convertible stroller concept, it’s worth checking out.

Of course, infant car seats can also be attached to these strollers.

EOS Lux can be bought here on a good price.

Conclusion

I can say that the Cybex Balios 2-in-1 model is quite lovable, and it’s now available at a good price, as it’s much more affordable second-hand. Perhaps the only inconvenience is that it cannot be folded with the seat attached, however, this is compensated by the good suspension, the comfortable seat, and the huge canopy.
